Inside Colter Cabin

A favorite for honeymoons

A Romantic Escape in True Log Construction

Colter Cabin delivers a truly romantic escape for one couple, but can also accommodate two couples, a small family, or serve as an artist or writer retreat. It has been home base for many honeymoons and anniversaries (and even an elopement), and guests tell us the authentic log construction, big fireplace and sweeping views make it feel like stepping back in time.

Evenings here tend to follow a happy routine: dinner off the gas grill, sunset from the porch while a dozen horses graze in the pasture next door, then a fire before bed. Mornings start with coffee on the upstairs balcony. Keep an eye out for deer, foxes, moose and bald eagles!

Colter Living Room with Fire

🌲 Host Insider Tip

Head up to Grand Targhee the back way via State Line Road. It’s the quicker trip from the cabins, and it’s the same road we use to reach the National Forest trailheads in summer.

Location

The Heart of “Wydaho” Country

Colter Cabin sits at the lower end of our 6-acre property on a quiet gravel county road, sheltered by aspen trees and the large garage. Enjoy your morning coffee on the front deck with views of Grand Targhee ski area and the 2,000-acre ranch next door. Guests love the balance: it feels secluded, yet Driggs is about 15 minutes away. The cabin is 9 miles from downtown Driggs, 13 miles from Grand Targhee ski and summer resort, 45 miles from Jackson Hole and 97 miles from Yellowstone National Park.

Men’s Journal named Driggs “the best small town in America” in 2002. It’s still true today!

My wife and I absolutely loved this place. It was the perfect size for 2 people and close enough to comfortably drive to surrounding towns and national parks, but far enough to feel private and quiet. The cabin is in a nice and peaceful area.
Ginger was very kind, helpful, and responsive. We couldn’t recommend this place enough!

We enjoyed staying at Ginger’s cabin a lot. It was very peaceful and comfortable. Convenient for our itinerary as we wanted to see a lot of national parks but still close enough to cute little towns that we could get groceries and have meals. Ginger’s recommendations on restaurants were spot on and we enjoyed Forage so much that we went back twice. We didn’t need anything while there which is always the sign of a great host! Ginger has everything set up wonderfully. Thank you!!

We loved every minute of our stay. I definitely want to come again. The charming cabin is beautifully located in the country complete with horses and wild flowers. The sound of the breeze blowing through the trees with the windows open was amazing. Such a peaceful and pleasant experience.

My wife and I loved our time at Colter Cabin during our honeymoon. Ginger and Jim were friendly and helpful, but also gave us our privacy. We loved the feel of the log cabin and almost wished we spent more time hanging out instead of sight-seeing.

The cabin is cozy and perfect for a small family. We enjoyed the indoor fireplace, grilling on the porch, and watching the horses in the adjacent property. The short drive over to Grand Tetons was reasonable, and going north to Yellowstone was also possible. The local town of Driggs provides all the groceries that you might need, not to mention just being an adorable spot to visit. Check out the rodeo at the local fairgrounds if visiting in the summer.

The Colter Cabin was amazing! It was exactly as described and the views were wonderful. We had a slight hiccup at first but Ginger was very easy to get a hold of, helpful, and professional, which allowed for a quick and easy resolution. We loved the fireplace, quick access to the Tetons, Yellowstone, and Craters of the Moon, and all of the amenities the cabin provided. I would definitely book the cabin again.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

We had a wonderful stay at this Tetonia cabin. The property was clean, comfortable, and well-equipped, making it an excellent home base for exploring Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks.

What made this stay special was the peaceful setting. We loved spending mornings with coffee while taking in the views and evenings watching the sunset, listening to the wind in the trees, and enjoying the quiet surroundings. The nearby horses and abundant wildlife added to the experience and made us feel connected to the natural beauty of the area.

Our son Cannon especially enjoyed bonding with the horses, exploring the mountains and rivers, and spotting wildlife throughout the trip. The location offered the perfect balance of seclusion and convenience for day trips into both parks.

We made beautiful family’s vacation memories here. We left feeling refreshed, grateful, and already talking about returning someday. We highly recommend.

Beautiful area and lovely cabin. We had a wonderful time. There was supposed to be laundry soap and there wasn't (not the end of the world!) and the coffee pot had moldy coffee in it. Other than that, the cabin was clean and we were very happy with our stay. Highly recommend!

Great location with spectacular views. The only draw back was there was no tv option and we had to use our own streaming passwords if we wanted to watch any thing. The remotes were very complicated to use. After a long day sightseeing or early in the morning it would have been nice to have tv. Unfortunately? Based on this, this rental would not be an option in the future.

Response from Ginger & Jimmy

Glad you enjoyed the cabin. We offer, for free, a full range of all channels and shows. I think you did not realize YouTube TV has taken the place of cable and dish in providing all the major channels and hundreds more. I wish you had found the written instructions, or contacted me. You just click on YouTube. Next time!

Ginger's place was the perfect getaway for a couple. It was fairly close to both national parks (about 1:15 to GTNP and 1:30 to Yellowstone). The cabin was very cozy and well-maintained. Even though it was August, it got quite chilly at night, so the fireplace was the perfect way to cap a day of hiking through the parks. Ginger was communicative through the whole process. This place was great for us, would definitely recommend!

Response from Ginger & Jimmy

The place was very cozy. It is an old cabin, down a rural gravel road, with a cool history (it is not a high-end hotel with fancy amenities which makes it unique and comfortable.) I didn’t feel like I had to worry about the kids messing something up which was nice. The guestbook and recommendations were appreciated. It had everything listed plus some. There were lots of small household items for guests to use as well which was great. We even had an issue while there (no one’s fault) which we were able to get it taken care of right away with Ginger and the property manager’s help. The town was very enjoyable and easy to get to. It was a long drive to Tetons and Yellowstone but we highly recommend visiting the areas nearby just as much! We felt very safe, cozy, and relaxed.

Wonderful Private Cabin

My son and I stayed 7 nights at this wonderful and private cabin flanked by pasture land and a view of the Grand Tetons. The cabin has amazing sunset views from both of the porches (one off of each bedroom). The porches overlook pastures with a dozen horses that graze and play throughout the day. We also saw a few deer on the property during the evenings. There is a family of foxes that lives in a woodpile down the road and come out around dusk. All the modern conveniences (KitchenAid appliances, pots/pans/etc, big TV w/ Apple TV, washer/dryer, and great water pressure - - which is nice after a long day exploring). Very private and down a well-maintained gravel road. It was 28 degrees the first two nights we were there and the big fireplace and ample seasoned wood delivered beautifully. (There's heat, too, but using the fireplace was way more fun!) Parking is simple (large gravel area in front of garage which is in front of the actual cabin) and check-in was a breeze. There are several hiking options in the area including some trails into the west side of the Tetons (trailheads about 15 minute drive from cabin). Grocery, dining, supplies are just a 15 minute drive away in Driggs. Wonderful stay and a great basecamp for Grand Teton adventures. With the Teton Pass out of commission, it was about 2 hours...but the drive is very scenic and the summer days are very long so there is plenty of time to head out to the Tetons in the morning and get back before dark! Wonderful!

Response from Ginger & Jimmy

So glad you had a good time! Thanks so much for the detailed review - always best when a guest shares all the special things we love about this cabin and the area. The Teton Pass is open now! Rest assured you saw the most beautiful areas in Idaho driving the (longer) road. Happy Summer!

Little Peace of Heaven

Can't say enough about how peaceful this cabin is. We were able to travel to both Yellowstone and Tetons national Park. The road closure requires some extra drive time but the drive was absolutely beautiful. Both parks are stunning. That being said the best part of our stay was the evening sunsets on the porch at the cabin. The birds songs were the only music we needed along with the sound of the wind blowing through the trees which sounded like the ocean. The sunsets are God's masterpieces each night giving us a glimpse of heaven. I've never seen sunsets like the ones of the cabin before in my life. Another bonus was the bed was incredibly comfortable. The mattress was just perfect for my bad back. The owner could not be more responsive. She was very caring about everything regarding our stay.

Ginger’s cabin is fantastic β€” perfect location, thoughtfully decorated, well appointed, picturesque and cozy as all get out. A Haven Set Among Beauty

My husband and I were thrilled when we arrived at this wonderful cabin. It was just as pictured and described (do not look at the Google picture taken 15 years ago!). It was surrounded by gorgeous aspen trees and wild flowers. The front porch has a cozy place to sit so see the morning sun, or the rising moon. The back porch and upper balcony (off the master suite) overlook the textured pasture with the beautiful horses grazing and frolicking, and seating is provided. I liked talking to them and when I played my Dean Martin crooner music, they looked up and seemed to like it. The sunset was breath taking, and on the evenings we were home, we sat out there and gazed at the majesty. The instructions for the house were very helpful, and several "things to do" brochures were provided. The cabin was well supplied with linens, towels, and washcloths. It was nice to have a washer and dryer to do a couple of small loads so we could take clean clothes home. We highly recommend this enchanting cabin. Of course the fact that it is fairly close to Jackson Hole, The Grand Teton National Park, and Yellowstone, not to mention all there is to do closer to "home", just made it even better. It will be one of my "happy places" forever!

Only about 50 minutes to Jackson, WY and 90 minutes to West Yellowstone. We loved the horses in the neighboring pasture, the decks off the living room and bedroom, and the views of the Tetons. Tetonia was a fun little town with a nice cafe and a cool local bar. Everything we were looking for! Would highly recommend.

Loved our stay!

Great place to stay on the back side of the Tetons and wanted to stay longer. Was hazy from the California smoke but cleared to give us a really great view. The cabin was beautiful and perfect for us! And watching the horses morning and evening was so nice. The stars were amazing. Highly recommend Harriman state park, Mesa Falls and the scenic drive south to Palisades Reservoir and (not the real) Grand Canyon. Thank you. It was really wonderful.

We had such a great time at the cabin and would love to come back again. It was so peaceful and it wasn't a far drive to Jackson Hole or the other local towns. We had a great time coming back and sitting on the porch watching all the horse in the field. The sunsets were fantastic.
FYI - the previous reviewer couldn't see the Tetons from the cabin due to the smoke cover caused by the fires out west.

Idaho is one of my faves, and we enjoyed being in horse country with views of pastureland, horses, and an occcasional deer. We expected a view of the Tetons as indicated in the listing's photos, and that was not the case, but within a short distance up the dirt road there were wonderful mountain views. Lots of recreational vehicles as well as horseback riding available.

Response from Ginger & Jimmy

Glad you liked the cabin. Sorry you missed the view of the Tetons... maybe the skies were not clear. You can see the Grand Teton just a bit from the front porch. Next time! Ginger

Slice of Heaven

This gorgeous cabin tucked in a corner of Idaho and Wyoming’s most picturesque farms was even better than we’d hoped for and larger than we’d imagined. I couldn’t help but β€œeek” with happiness as we pulled down the gravel drive and walked down the pathway of native grasses and wildflowers. The breeze blew each night, making the aspen leaves swish and sparkle. The rooms were comfortable. I cooked every night, which was a great added bonus to make us feel cozy and home. I would 10/10 book this again. Great memories made. I can’t thank the owners enough for their hospitality.

Cozy Cabin Stay

We loved everything about the cabin. The cabin exceeded the photos on line, it is just beautiful. We especially enjoyed the isolation and quiet, the views from both the front and back are lovely. We also enjoyed watching the horses in the pasture next to the cabin. We especially enjoyed the upstairs balcony watching the sunsets in the evening. Our only disappointment was the condition of the grill. We had hoped to grill steaks but it was so dirty we didn't use it. The kitchen is more than ample and stocked with anything you could possibly want for cooking. Also a generous supply of paper goods, towels, etc., we didn't worry about running out. The washer and dryer are small of course but plenty big enough for our needs. We hope to come again!!!!!!

Response from Ginger & Jimmy

So glad you had a nice time. So sorry about the grill!! We also love to grill outside. I have a new cleaning crew, and I bet I forgot to put it on their list. From now on it will be clean!

The Colter Cabin was a fantastic β€œget away spot” for my wife and I. It was a beautiful cabin that was on a quiet road away from a lot of people. There only traffic was farm and ranch traffic and we hardly noticed. The views were great. We thoroughly enjoyed sitting on the upstairs balcony and watching the sunsets. Just a great cabin for us!!!

Peaceful Getaway

My parents and I wanted a nice getaway from everything. The Colter Cabin was everything we hoped for and more. It's located just outside of town and surrounded by wide open space, beautiful views of mountains in the distance, and a pasture of very friendly horses.

We stumbled across this cabin and right away this looked exactly like what we were looking for. It was reasonable priced, extremely clean, and perfectly peaceful. The owners were wonderful and answered any questions we had. It is noticeable that they have thoughtfully planned for this cabin to be a nice place for guests to stay.

We were able to go to Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Teton Nation Park while we were there. It was a bit of a drive, but we knew we wanted to be out of the hustle and bustle, so we didn't mind at all. We would highly recommend staying at the Colter Cabin.

We had a terrific time at Colter Cabin. Everything was as advertised, and communication with the owner was prompt and helpful. The cabin itself was cute and comfortable. The setting was very quiet and peaceful. We were in the area primarily to hike. The cabin is located on the west side of Grand Teton NP. We drove one day to the east side of Grand Teton NP, but also found some great hiking on the west side, much closer to the cabin (Jedediah Wilderness, the Alaska Basin Trail was great).

Tidy Little Log Cabin

This little log cabin is a great place for a couple or a small family. The location provides a gateway to Grand Teton Park, Yellowstone Park, and many other activities in Teton Valley. Although we only slept there (we live nearby and gave up our bed to our son and friends who came from Eastern cities for a ski trip), we found the accommodations to be very comfortable. This cabin has history in the area and is very unique. People will enjoy the antiques that decorate this place. I imagine that it would be really nice in the summer. Right now there is a huge amount of snow everywhere (record snowfall this year). Don't hesitate to rent this place. The only (slight) drawback is bringing in your own bottled water for drinking and cooking.

My husband and I were in the area to explore Yellowstone & GTNP. The cabin was just off a gravel road, but it seemed like we were miles from anyone. It was nice to be able to come home after a day of exploring to use the gas grill and fix our meals. The bed was comfortable and the cabin was adequately stocked. It was nice to have my coffee on the back deck in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening. One evening at dusk we drove up and there was a moose in the field behind the cabin! I wasn’t able to get a really good picture of it, but you can tell it is a moose in the picture . 😊 We didn’t see any bear at the cabin or during our visit to Yellowstone or GTNP and I was bummed about that. FAQ

Colter Cabin FAQ

How many people does Colter Cabin sleep?

Colter Cabin sleeps up to 4 guests. The upstairs main bedroom has a four-poster queen bed with an en suite bath, and the second bedroom (which doubles as a den) has a twin daybed plus an extra twin mattress that can be set up on the floor.

Is Colter Cabin a full-time rental?

No. We regularly block off time for family and friends to use Colter Cabin throughout the year. That means we keep the kitchen fully stocked, the firewood piled up and the heat cranking. We regularly practice being “our own guests,” which means you’ll always find Colter Cabin ready to go!

Is Colter Cabin good for a honeymoon or anniversary?

It’s one of our favorite uses for it! Colter Cabin has hosted many honeymoons and anniversaries, and even an elopement with photos on the property. Couples love the privacy, the fireplace, and sunsets from the upstairs balcony.

How close is Colter Cabin to Horseshoe Cabin?

Both cabins are on the same 6-acre property, but they are quite a distance from each other. Colter Cabin is at the lower end of the property near the county road, and Horseshoe Cabin is tucked up in the woods near the top of the property on a private driveway. The two cabins are separated by acres of trees and open fields.

What are the check-in and check-out times?

Check-in is at 4 PM and check-out is at 11 AM at both cabins. Early check-in and late check-out are sometimes available on request, based on availability and our cleaners’ schedule. Both cabins have self check-in.

Where exactly is Wydaho?

Wydaho is the somewhat fanciful name locals have given to this beautiful slice of the Tetons. Alta, Wyoming is a small town that is essentially landlocked from the rest of the state by the mountains and can only be reached by road through Idaho. Our cabins are in Idaho, but the Wyoming state line is only a few hundred yards down the county road. State Line Road runs north-south along the border and is the road we use to reach both the National Forest and Grand Targhee ski area.
